‘So’ – the new buzzword?

September 18th, 2008 No comments

Since starting Tyfish, I’ve gotten back into attending more tech startup events. Among other things, I’ve been noticing that everyone begins their sentences with ‘So’ as in, ‘So, where are you in your fund raising efforts’, or ‘So, as the widget thing begins to scale…’ . I find it amusing because I’m not sure if anyone else has given much thought to this vernacular trend. It’s much easier to pick up this kind of thing in the hip-hop culture with terms like ‘Yo’ and ‘That’s what’s up’, but it’s not something you expect among the geek set.

While checking out the TechCrunch 50 (50 great presentations from some early stage technology companies), I was surprised to see how often ’so’ was used at the beginning of a sentence. One company that I really like, Fitbit, is coming out with this ultra-portable fitness monitor and the CEO gives a strong presentation. He uses the word ’so’ several times as do some of the other presenters. Not that there’s anything wrong with it – I just think that it’s funny that no one that I know has ever acknowledged it.

So, the next time someone begins a sentence with ‘so’, you’ll remember what you read about it here and now it’s stuck in your head.
